Gunyah Tiny House Makes the Most of a Small Footprint

Andrea | 06/06/2026

The Gunyah by Häuslein Tiny House Co. proves that a tiny home doesn't need a large footprint to feel comfortable and functional. Designed in Australia, this compact model focuses on simplicity, flexibility, and mobility, making it well suited for guest accommodation, Airbnb rentals, or as a private retreat.

Named after the Aboriginal word meaning "house," "hut," or "shelter," the Gunyah measures just 5 m (16.5 ft) in length and is built on a road-legal trailer. Weighing less than 3 tonnes, it can be towed by many 4WD vehicles, giving owners the flexibility to relocate the home when needed.

The exterior combines modern metal cladding with warm timber accents, creating a clean and contemporary appearance. Large windows bring natural light into the interior, helping the space feel larger than its modest dimensions suggest.

Inside, the layout is designed around efficient use of space. The living area provides room for a comfortable sofa and entertainment setup, while the kitchen includes essentials such as a two-burner cooktop, sink, breakfast bar, and storage cabinetry. Despite its compact size, the kitchen is equipped for day-to-day living and short-term stays alike.

A loft bedroom positioned above part of the living space accommodates a queen-size mattress and includes a skylight that adds both natural light and a sense of openness. Depending on the chosen layout, the home can sleep up to four people through a combination of loft sleeping space and convertible living areas.

The bathroom is compact but complete, featuring a shower, toilet, vanity, and storage. Häuslein also offers options for off-grid setups, including composting toilet systems and solar-ready configurations for owners seeking greater independence from traditional utilities.

One of the most appealing aspects of the Gunyah is its versatility. It was originally conceived as a guest house and short-stay accommodation, but its thoughtful design allows it to serve as a home office, vacation cabin, mobile residence, or full-time living space for those embracing a minimalist lifestyle.

The Gunyah demonstrates that successful tiny home design is not simply about reducing square footage. Instead, it focuses on creating a comfortable, functional environment where every element serves a purpose. Through smart planning, quality materials, and a flexible layout, this small Australian tiny house delivers a surprisingly complete living experience.
